In a run-down amusement park on a desolate beach in New Hampshire, thirteen-year-old Jack Sawyer is about to learn some hard truths—about his father’s death, about why he and his mother are on the run from his sinister uncle Morgan, and about the real nature of the mysterious realm Jack once called the Daydreams. Now, with help from his newfound friend Speedy Parker, this young man will reclaim his identity as Travellin Jack and make his first foray back into the Territories to retrieve the magical Talisman, an object of immense cosmic significance. Yet even more important to Jack, the Talisman holds the key to saving his mother’s life. In the Terrorities, where monsters lurk, evil watches, and an unbelievably precious prize awaits, Jack embarks upon a desperate quest to fulfill a destiny he never sought but cannot escape.

"One of my favorite King books. A great collaborating with Peter Straub. I am so happy that during the late 80's early 90's King movie glut that they never got around to trying to make this into a movie. Maybe now with the talent and cgi they could do it. This is so different from anything King wrote before, is why I like it so much."

The Talisman Volume 1 The Road of Trials Robin Furth Stephen King Peter Straub Tony Shasteen Nei Ruffino Books Reviews
- This is Stephen King, what else can I say about it?
Of course the story will be expected to have darker elements than other mainstream writings. It starts of a little slow, but quickly speeds up into a faster paced, attention keeping story. The characters have quickly endeared themselves to me and I became emotional invested in the book. This one is one of my 'forever' books, as I can keep re-reading it and still become involved in Jack's world. I can honestly say that Wolf is my favorite character.
I would NOT hesitate to recommend this book to any fan of an intense, attention- keeping fantasy/ reality fictional story. This was a personal purchase. - As my review title says, this is one of the greatest books ever written. I have 2 favourite books of all time & this is one of them. Unsurprisingly the other is also written by Stephen King, The Stand. My words will never do justice to this book so I won't even try. Just trust that if you ever have doubt in Stephen King's ability to transport you into another world, read this book & you'll never doubt him again. Thank you Mr King, this book helped shape my world.
- Third time reading and still one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time. Wonderful, high level of diction, but not snooty. It just makes everything come alive so much more.
Both King and Straub write the best villains, and there are several very good bad guys to hate here. There are also several very good guys to like, even love, aside from the main character, Jack Sawyer.
If you haven't read THE TALISMAN in a while, it may be time to read it again. If you've never read it, it's definitely time for you to read it! - I LOVE THIS BOOK! I first read it in high school......(NO I WILL NOT TELL YOU WHAT YEAR). I absolutely fell in love with the writings of Peter Straub after this collaboration with Stephen King. As you know Stephan King is the MASTER of writing fiction and horror and Peter Straub is his "TWINNER". I truly believe this book was written with the both of these two great writers in another realm. It is surreal and will make you think of the slight possibility that there is a good probability that the "Territories" could exist. I truly hope you enjoy this GREAT piece of fiction.
- I am a longtime Stephen King fan and have read at least 30 of his books. This being the first co-written by Peter Straub, I was not sure what to expect.
I have to say that the beginning was a bit too slow and intangible for me and it made no sense how the health of one person could matter so much....but then we slowly find out...and the journey felt like The Stand (good vs bad) mixed up with The Gunslinger (crazy train and crazy creatures). This is meant as a compliment. Really enjoyed the character development, but ending felt a bit predictable at least concptually (there are many diversions along the way). In any event, enjoyed it...well worth sticking with the slow beginning. - I was told this was a fantastic book. However the person who told me that it was read it when they were still in school. As an adult I found it slow and "corny". It was a real stretch of the imagination to even consider it a story that kept my attention and wanting to keep reading. I found the problem/solution to be very simplistic and unbelieveable.
On to Black House and I hope that it's better. - I have always loved both Stephen King and Peter Straub books. This collaboration is excellent. There is just something about this book that keeps me reading it over and over. I know I read it at least once a year-when I first bought it, I read it and then immediately read it a second time. It is sad, it is happy, it is supernatural and it is scary. That such a young boy sets out on a journey to save his mother is remarkable. His trials and tribulations are noted with great detail. His fears, his highs, his lows are written as though I am going through them and there is always that essence that he doesn't lose hope-nothing will make him quit. All of the characters are very well fleshed out, the evil and the good and even some of the minor characters get more attention so the story flows better. I cannot recommend this book highly enough
- One of my favorite King books. A great collaborating with Peter Straub.
